The Minister of Economy and Finance Chairs the Opening of a Meeting on International Trade Statistics

Mrs. Nadia FETTAH, Minister of Economy and Finance, chaired on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in Marrakech, the opening session of the meeting organized by the Office des Changes in partnership with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). This meeting is dedicated to the adoption of new manuals on international trade statistics for goods and services.

This event, taking place from May 6 to 9, 2025, brings together several senior officials and experts in the field of international trade statistics from more than 30 countries.

In her opening speech, the Minister of Economy and Finance emphasized the crucial importance of foreign trade statistics in a rapidly changing world: “In a world where value chains are being redefined, trade policies must be more resilient and inclusive. Data has thus become an essential tool to anticipate, understand, and act,” she highlighted.

The Minister also noted that such data provides significant support to governments in implementing trade policy measures and conducting bilateral and multilateral negotiations. It is also of vital importance to companies engaging internationally, whether to find new markets, seek low-cost sources of supply, or identify potential partners.

Mrs. FETTAH further highlighted that Morocco has for several years been committed to a dynamic of profound economic transformation and to the development and strengthening of its statistical system, particularly in the area of foreign trade.

The Minister underscored the quality of the existing partnership between Morocco and UN bodies in various fields, especially international trade. She recalled that in March 2022, Morocco was unanimously elected by UN member States to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for a six-year term (2022–2027).

Organized by the Office des Changes in partnership with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the closing meeting of the Expert Group responsible for revising the international trade statistics manuals for goods and services is part of the global momentum to strengthen the reliability, comprehensiveness, and comparability of international trade statistics.
