Signing ceremony with the ADB of a loan agreement in an amount of 53 590 000 euros

On Thursday, March 4th 2010, Mr. Salah Eddine Mezouar, Minister of Economy and Finance and Ms. Amani Abou-Zeid, the Resident Representative of the African Development Bank in Morocco (ADB) signed at the headquarters of the Ministry a loan agreement amounting to 53 590 000 euros so as to finance the (PNEEI).

The ceremony was attended by Mr. AKHANOUCH Aziz, Minister of Agriculture and Maritime Fishing. The (PNEEI), which is part of the transverse programs provided by the Green Morocco Plan, aims to help improve the living conditions of rural populations through sustaining water resources management and improving the productivity of irrigated areas. The (PNEEI) ensures the rational use of irrigation water resources in a context of the increasing scarcity of these resources.

The (ADB) helps finance the PNEEI in three river basins: Oum Rbia, Moulouya and Loukkos.

The ADB project covers an area of approximately 20 000 ha including 5 853 farms, representing a target population of nearly 30 000 inhabitants. This project will fund the setting up, in the basins above, of localized irrigation infrastructures (mostly drip) as well as measures of the recovery of available water resources and capacity of the operators involved (Implementing Agencies, Agricultural Water Users Associations, etc...).

Close of, Mr. Salah Eddine MEZOUAR and Mrs. Amani Abou-Zeid welcomed the level and quality of cooperation between the Kingdom of Morocco and the ADB, and reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen it.
