Webinar: "The Future of the Dollar"

As part of the "IDF THURSDAYS" organized by the Institute Of Finance, a webinar entitled "The Future of the Dollar" was held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 2:30 p.m.

The webinar was moderated by Dr. Kalpakian, Ph.D. in International Studies from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia; and professor at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane.

This webinar sheds light on the US dollar evolution and illustrates the constant struggle through History between sound money proponents and quantitative easing advocates.

According to Dr. Kalpakian the dollar's importance in international finance was based on four main pillars: the size of the US economy, the US' clear commitment to free trade, the Federal Reserve's commitment to low inflation, and the ability of dollar holders to convert their dollars to useful commodities like oil at market prices on a commercial basis. This presentation looks at the present situation regarding these four factors and argues that the dollar's continued importance will depend on how well the US addresses it's shortcomings in these four pillars

In this regard, Dr. Kalpakian covers decisive events such as the ‘Free Silver’ inflationary policy, the USD’s rise to global prominence in the post-WW2 fall of the Ottawan System of Preferences, and the modern challenges in the most recent geopolitical and economic context.

A particular emphasis is put on how the USA is currently facing strong inflationary pressures at home and a gradual decreased use of its currency in international energy transactions from rivals and allies alike, and on the extent to which this could foretell the emergence of other reserve currencies.

The Q&A discussion elaborates on the potential contenders and the ways to reverse the USD depreciating trend, as well as the possible role for cryptocurrencies in the future.
