On October 9-15, 2023, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund issued a joint statement confirming that the Annual Meetings of the two international institutions will take place in Marrakech.
This confirmation, which comes ten days after the earthquake that struck the province of Al-Haouz, 70 km from Marrakech, once again confirms the confidence of the two international institutions in the Kingdom's resilience and ability to cope with crisis situations, as demonstrated in recent years under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
This decision, announced by the two Bretton Woods institutions, follows on from the due diligence carried out jointly with the Moroccan government over the last ten days, enabling them to take note of the various measures taken by the Kingdom to manage the human and material consequences of the earthquake. It also makes it possible to assess the capacity of the city of Marrakech to host this event in the best possible conditions.
On the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, a general mobilization was prepared right from the first few hours, to expand an exemplary and coordinated intervention on the ground. The government, the Royal Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Civil Protection, local authorities and various components of civil society all mobilized to provide immediate and organized responses to the urgent needs of the affected populations in terms of first aid, medical care, accommodation, food, blankets, clothing and the rapid return to school of the children concerned.
Measures have also been taken to ensure and implement a rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrading plan for the affected region, enabling an immediate return to normality and a rapid resumption of activities.
Thus, from October 09 to 15, 2023, Marrakech will be the host city for this major annual meeting of international finance, welcoming finance ministers and central bank governors from 189 member countries. Public sector leaders, parliamentarians, private sector decision-makers and experts, NGO representatives, economists, academics and international media will gather in the Ochre city to discuss global economic issues, development challenges and financing policies in a context of slowdown exacerbated by rising geopolitical tensions.
Morocco's hosting of these Annual Meetings is a recognition by both institutions of King Mohammed VI's leadership and the major progress achieved by the Kingdom over the past 24 years.
With the same determination, legendary hospitality and expertise in organizing major international events, Morocco is getting ready in a few days' time to host this global event, which marks its return to our continent 50 years after it was held in Kenya in 1973.
The Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF will take place from October 09 to 15, 2023 in Marrakech, the African host city of international finance.
