Morocco's efforts in good tax governance were, Thursday, March 21st 2019 in Brussels, the focus of talks between the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Mohamed Benchaaboun, and the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, Mr. Pierre Moscovici.

During this event, a number of issues of common interest were tackled, including taxation and good tax governance, stated Mr. Benchaaboun at the end of this meeting. He noted that the EU Council recorded "a positive development with respect to Morocco's commitment to comply with the rules of good governance as they are generally sustained across all developed countries".

He pointed, in particular to the forthcoming adoption this year in Morocco of a framework law intended to "establish the main principles of taxation and good fiscal governance."

These efforts were welcomed by the European Commissioner in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, who admitted that "Morocco performed well by changing tax regimes that would be harmful as an international assessment of what good tax governance might be. "

He was pleased with Morocco’s commitments in this respect, while praising the quality of its cooperation with the EU in this field.

The prospects for EU-Morocco economic cooperation were also tackled at this meeting, which was an opportunity for both sides to reiterate the commitment of Morocco and the European Union to further develop their cooperation in various sectors.

"We have scheduled missions in the weeks to come that will provide the basis for a much closer cooperation than in the past," Mr. Benchaaboun stated.

On the other hand, Mr. Moscovici stressed the EU's will to "give a new impetus to this relationship". He noted that both sides have on this occasion agreed upon "setting a new approach" in this regard.
