Discussion workshop: “Are middle classes emerging in Africa?”

The Ministry of Economy and Finance’s Department of Economic Studies and Financial Forecast organized on Thursday, April 5th, 2018 a discussion workshop on the theme: “Are middle classes emerging in Africa?” in partnership with the French Development Agency.

The discussion workshop’s aim was to share ideas on the emerging of middle classes in African countries, based on instances of middle-income countries from different continents. During this workshop, the study cases shown encompassed Morocco, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Turkey, Brazil and Vietnam.

Thus, the DESFF developed the case of Morocco; the World Bank Group covered Nigeria’s case, whereas the French Development Agency covered Cote d’Ivoire, Turkey, Vietnam and Brazil.

Officials of other directories of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, representatives of national institutions such as Bank Al-Maghrib ; the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the National Observatory for Human Development were present at this meeting, as well as representatives of internationals organizations like the French Development Agency, the World Bank Group and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

At the end of this discussion workshop, the participants welcomed the growing interest to the matter of the emerging middle classes in Africa and the quality of the debate around this topic.
