Signing, with the European Union, of an agreement to finance the National Sanitation Program

Mr. Salah Eddine Mezouar, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Saad Hassar Secretary of State to the Minister of Interior and Mr. Abdelkebir ZAHOUD Secretary of State, Water and the Environment and His Excellency Mr. Eneko LANDABURU Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Rabat signed November 3rd 2010 at the Ministry of Economy and Finance an agreement to finance the National Sanitation Program (NSP).

During this meeting, the Minister of Economy and Finance stressed the high priority the Government gives to (NSP) to make up for the delay accumulated in 2020 in sanitation sector. Mr. Mezouar recalled that the aim of (NSP) whose total cost is estimated at 43 billion dirhams, is to achieve an overall rate of connection to the sewerage system from 80% in urban areas compared with the current figure of 70% and reduce pollution generated by wastewater at least 60%.

In this respect, Mr. Salah Eddine Mezouar underlined the exemplary mobilization of our key partners for the development of this program. In fact, besides the assistance of the European Union amounting to 50 million Euros with a $ 10 million for the Neighbourhood Investment Facility, the program also receives support from the French Development Agency, the KFW, the European Investment Bank, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and JICA.

After the ceremony, Mr. Salah Eddine Mezouar and Mr. Eneko LANDABURU welcomed the level and quality of cooperation relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the European Union, asserting their willingness to pursue their reinforcement.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Director General of the National Office of Drinking Water.
