The Kingdom of Morocco is hosting, from June 9 to 11, 2026 in Rabat, the proceedings of the 45th Annual General Assembly (AGA) of Shelter Afrique, under the theme: “The Future of Cities: Financing Inclusive, Green and Resilient Urban Development”.
The program of this AGA includes, in addition to the bank’s shareholders’ plenary session scheduled for Thursday, June 11, several parallel activities, notably a symposium on urban development financing, a ministerial roundtable organized under the theme: “Preparing Sustainable Housing and Urban Development Projects: Certifications and the Roles of Governments”, as well as field visits.
This General Assembly will bring together Ministers from several member countries of Shelter Afrique, in addition to representatives from the public and private sectors of African countries, as well as financial and technical partners active in the fields of urban development and housing across the continent.
In this context, Madame Minister of Economy and Finance chaired, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the opening ceremony of this 45th General Assembly. During her opening address, she recalled the priority accorded by His Majesty the King, may God assist Him, to strengthening South-South cooperation, particularly with the African continent.
Madame Minister also expressed the satisfaction of the Kingdom of Morocco in hosting this important African meeting dedicated to the issues of housing, urbanization and territorial development, while commending the efforts made by Shelter Afrique in support of the development of the housing sector across the African continent.
On this occasion, Madame Minister highlighted the importance of the demographic and urban dynamics experienced by Africa, which constitute both a strategic opportunity and a major challenge, particularly in terms of housing, urban infrastructure and resilience to climate change.
In this regard, Madame Minister recalled the significant progress achieved by many African countries through the implementation of land reforms and innovative mechanisms promoting the emergence of sustainable cities, emphasizing the importance of framing the actions undertaken by States within a clear, coherent and long-term urban development approach.
In this respect, she stressed financing as the key lever of this equation, which must be approached in a comprehensive and integrated manner, covering the entire urban development value chain.
Finally, Madame Minister highlighted the Moroccan experience in promoting housing, recalling the main achievements accomplished in this field under the enlightened leadership of his majesty king Mohammed VI, may God assist him.
