The Minister of Economy and Finance receives the President of the Commission of ECOWAS

In the horizon of Morocco's membership in ECOWAS, whose agreement in principle was given on June 4, 2017 in Monrovia, Mr. Mohammed BOUSSAID, Minister of Economy and Finance, received, on Tuesday 29 August 2017 in Rabat, Mr. Marcel Alain DE SOUZA, president of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In this meeting Mr. BOUSSAID said he was delighted to receive the President of the Commission of ECOWAS, a group in which Morocco requested membership, "based on its conviction regarding its African depth, as well as in implementation of His Majesty the King's vision for the African continent in general and West Africa in particular", he said.

Mr. Marcel Alain DE SOUZA in his part said that the principles of accepting Morocco's membership in ECOWAS are generally respected by the Kingdom.

This meeting was also an opportunity to review the different principles of accepting Morocco's membership in ECOWAS and, compulsorily, the principles of accepting ECOWAS operational and institutional texts. The two officials also discussed the convergence and stability pact that requires respecting standards in terms of budget, particularly the budgetary deficit that should not exceed 5% of GDP. The discussions also concerned the main points that will be included in the impact assessment that will be presented on December 16 during the State and Government Leaders Conference. The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the free trade scheme for the movement of goods and ECOWAS common external tariff.

While stressing the need to establish a cooperation that benefits all parties, Mr. Alain DE SOUZA underlined that the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Government are committed to this membership being effective as soon as possible.
